A performance at Deal Real's Ladies Night is not for the faint of heart. It's Friday evening in this tiny record shop off London's Carnaby Street, and every square inch of floor space not devoted to hip-hop vinyl is occupied by people watching the store's monthly showcase for female singers, DJs and MCs. The spectators stand so close that the performers can't just see the whites of their eyes, they can virtually conduct an ophthalmological examination. If people are unimpressed, they don't care to hide it. With a stud in her nose, braces on her teeth and a swathe of dark hair over her eyes, she resembles a less circular Kelly Osbourne.
