T here are plenty of attractive college towns in the US. But Chapel Hill, in the centre of North Carolina, equidistant from its mountains and its coast, blends liberal philosophy and Southern culture in a way that borders on the utopian. Even the fire trucks are Carolina Blue. Town and gown have a special relationship here. Since then, an influx of research and tech companies — not to mention a successful college basketball team — has brought prosperity and respectability.

The NYRB Classics series is dedicated to publishing an eclectic mix of fiction and non-fiction from different eras and times and of various sorts. NYRB Classics are, to a large degree, discoveries, the kind of books that people typically run into outside of the classroom and then remember for life. Literature in translation constitutes a major part of the NYRB Classics series, simply because so much great literature has been left untranslated into English, or translated poorly, or deserves to be translated again, much as any outstanding book asks to be read again. Published in handsome uniform trade paperback editions, almost all NYRB Classics feature an introduction by an outstanding writer, scholar, or critic of our day. Taken as a whole, NYRB Classics may be considered a series of books of unrivaled variety and quality for discerning and adventurous readers. Click here to view the details of our events. By Andrew Collins. For many years a traditional bastion of conservatism, like its Southern neighbors, North Carolina has changed considerably in recent years in terms of its attitudes toward and popularity among gays and lesbians. As younger, more tolerant, and more politically progressive residents continue to move here, a number of communities have developed increasingly visible LGBT communities. My advice is to go with your conscience, and if you do decide to visit North Carolina while this ugly law is in place, go ahead and be visible, patronize the hundreds of highly gay-supportive businesses throughout the state, and help support your LGBT allies around the state.
My partner and I are looking to travel to North Carolina this fall. We are considering relocated there and plan on touring the following:. Chapel Hill. We are thinking of spending a day or two in each place and interested in feedback on the accommodations while we are there. Also, any and all feedback on the above cities for others who have considered relocating to North Carolina would be greatly appreciated.
